Joufu stood in a forest clearing, about 20 meters from the treeline. He watched as his chakra created a swirling tornado of air around his right arm. So far, so good. With a shift in his chakra, the tornado dissipated.
He had spent the last 8 months perfecting the techniques that would eventually be combined to create a new jutsu. Today would be his first attempt at combining the two.
Joufu took a deep breath to calm himself, and his chakras. "Focus Joufu. You have the power, you can do this. Just stay focused and calm."
Slowly, Joufu formed the first hand seal and closed his eyes. He stood, unmoving, for 3 seconds, and then, in a heartbeat, attempted the technique.
Heat, pressure, and pain. Joufu woke up, laying on his back feeling like he had just stepped into a kiln. Opening his eyes, he saw the face of his mother, looking down on him, disdain clear in her features. "My son, the fool of Otogakure. You should know better than to try this yourself. Next time use a kage bushin so you don't damage yourself."
"Pain is necessary if one is to learn anything in life. If I destroy myself trying to perfect this technique, then that I was never worthy in the first place." Joufu retorted.
Standing up, Joufu saw the destruction he had caused. He was laying 5 meters from where he had stood before. The treeline 20 meters in front of where he was standing was aflame, as was the grass leading to it. And finally, a crater now occupied his old spot, a one meter deep dent in the earth.
"If you truly believe that, then you are even more of a fool than I thought." his mother said, helping him stand. When he was upright, she took his right arm -now burnt to a crisp- and began healing it. "Mock me if you wish mother, but I am the one who unlocked the Mangekyo Sharingan as a child. And I am the one who killed father. I don't need advice from the woman who was so submissive to such an abusive bastard."
For the first time in months, his mother smiled. "Now is that any way to speak to your mother? You know, I could just leave your arm like this to teach you a lesson."
Joufu smiled back. "You're so heartless mother. By the way, I assume you were watching me. Any suggestions for my technique?"
Her smile faded and she looked serious again. "Wait for the fire so that it is nearly dissipated before you create the tornado." Her sharingan flashed in the sunlight. Having a training partner with sharingan was a huge advantage. She could tell him exactly where he went wrong, and reduce the amount of time it would take to perfect the technique. Although, at this point, Joufu would settle for a version of the jutsu that wouldn't leave him incapacitated.
He turned to face the right flank of the burning part of the forest. His mother finished healing his arm. "I'm going to try it again."
His mother nodded and stepped a few meters behind him. Once again, Joufu took a deep, cleansing breath.
__________
After a week of constant training and dozens of failed attempts, Joufu was close to creating a semi-usable technique. The only problem was that every time he used the jutsu, it burned his arm so much that, if he didn't have his mother close at hand, he'd have lost it because of the damage.
Joufu watched as his latest attempt set fire to 8000 square meters of forest. Because of the damage caused by his jutsu, he practiced well away from the village.
"You need to increase the diameter of the tornado or the flame will keep escaping." His mother said as she healed his arm yet again. She had continued to advise him during his training.
"If I do that, it'll spread out so much that the target area will be irresponsibly large. Practically useless offensively." Joufu wasn't the type to play defense.
"You can solve the focusing problem some other way. If you continue like this you'll lose this arm and the entire technique will be useless." He could have been imagining it, but he thought he heard a touch of concern in her voice. Concern that he hadn't heard since the day he killed his father.
"You're worried about me aren't you mother?" He looked at her face and knew he was right. He smiled. "It's unbecoming of you mother." he said looking back at the raging flames. "Stick with the cold heart routine. It suits you better."
She smirked at his words, flawlessly assuming the same role he had just described. "As the fool wishes. Still, you don't have enough defensive capabilities. I think you should just focus on making this technique less self-sacrificing and use it when you're cornered. You should know how important it is to keep open an escape route."
Joufu heaved a sigh and looked at his mother again. "You're right, of course. When you're finished with my arm, step back. I'll increase the diameter as per your request."
She nodded. Joufu thought he detected the slightest hint of relief cross her features. In just a few minutes she released his arm and backed away, giving him a reassuring nod.
Joufu closed his eyes and concentrated. Then, in a split-second, he spat fire, and created his tornado.
__________
A line of fire half a kilometer long burned brightly against the twilight sky. The smell of burning forest filled the afternoon air. The only thing that Joufu cared about though, was the fact that the burns on his arm were so minor, that he could have taken care of them without his mother's help.
"You see? And not only could it be a great defensive technique, but you could also use it as a first strike attack." His mother seemed completely satisfied with the result, and Joufu found himself reluctantly agreeing with her.
"I suppose this will do for now, but I won't stop striving fr the perfect combination." He wasn't about to give up on this.
"I would never expect you to. But this is a great breakthrough no matter how you look at it." She smiled and looked at him, her face full of an emotion Joufu had only the slightest recollection of, motherly pride. "Remember Joey, mother knows best."
He nodded and then added quietly to himself, "I will mom. I will"
